Client Station Setup for Using People's Daily Database

The procedure illustrated in this setup guide is for setting up client stations to properly access People’s Daily Network Database provided by TwinBridge Software Corporation. This setup guide in a PDF file “SetupGuideEng.pdf” can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.twinbridge.com/Public/PDSetup/PDSetup4AR8/

There are two parts of this setup. After the first part of the setup is done, a user can browse and search the entire data base contents with the client station. This part of setup MUST be completed before executing the second part of the setup.

The second part will enable a client station to properly display the original newspaper images in PDF with Adobe Reader 8 or later version. Please make sure the client station has Adobe Reader 8 or later version already installed.


Please Note:
Adobe Reader 8 is strongly recommended for client stations used to access People’s Daily Database.
Due to a Third-Party Plug-In support issue, Adobe Reader 7.0x can not print PDF files of PD Database.
A client station needs to be set up with this procedure ONLY once.

Setup Part I:
Please follow the instructions below to set the non-Unicode support to "Chinese (PRC)".

  1. "Start" - "Control Panel"

  2. With "Classic View" interface, double left click on "Regional and Language Options". 


  3. With "Category View", double left click on "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options."


  4. Then click on "Regional and Language Options".


  5. Click on "Advanced" tab,select "Chinese (PRC)" for "Language for non-Unicode programs". Then click "OK".


  6. Click on "Yes" when the following message window pops up.


  7. Click on "Yes" to restart Windows

 

Setup Part II.

In addition to full text, full-image reproductions of People’s Daily newspaper are included in this digital archive as indexed and searchable PDF files for quality viewing. Setup Part II will enable client stations to properly display these PDF files in Simplified Chinese. An automated procedure “PDSetup4AR8.exe” will do this part of the setup. Please download PDSetup4AR8.exe from ftp://ftp.twinbridge.com/Public/PDSetup/PDSetup4AR8/

Double left click on executable file "PDSetup4AR8.exe".
It will carry out three tasks:

  1. Installing Simplified Chinese support for Adobe Reader 8 or newer version
    Please click on "Next"


  2. If you see the following window, Click on "Install", then wait for the installation to finish.




  3. If you see the following window, Chinese Simplified Fonts Support for Adobe Reader 8 is already installed. Click on “Cancel” then “Yes” to confirm.




  4. Either way, click on "Finish" when being prompted.




  5. Installing a Third-Party Plug-In FileOpen into Adobe Reader. This process will take about one minute. Please wait for "Installation Complete" message window. Then click on "Ok" to install fonts.


  6. Installing fonts needed for viewing original People's Daily images in PDF
    Please click on "Next"


  7. If you see the following window, click on "Install"


  8. If you see the following window, the fonts for People’s Daily PDF file are already installed. Click on “Cancel”, then “Yes” to confirm.




  9. Either way, click on "Finish" when being prompted.



 

You now need change a setting for Adobe Reader:

  1. Open Adobe Reader and change the setting preferences as illustrated:




  2. The system needs a reboot for this change.

  3. Restart Windows.

  4. Access TwinBridge PDDA server at http://pd.twinbridge.com or the designated URL for your institution
