The search engine is the centerpiece of the electronic edition.  The developers at Green Apple analyzed the best features from seven different search engines available on the market and then created their own, which was further enhanced with features unique to the ebook environment.  The final product is a six-layer positive and negative search engine.  Users can search by keyword, time period, phrase, article title (including a fragment of the title), and most usefully, users can input negative conditions that select and/or rule out certain search results.  Since the search engine is text based, it is extremely fast.  A typical search of the entire People's Daily collection requires only about one second.

Search Engine

The search engine is capable of searching for articles by subject type, such as politics, economics, and culture.  The specific functions of the search engine are described below:

  • Date Search.  Search the subset of the publishing date file and identifies all related articles.

  • Title Search.  Uses either the full title or a fragment of it and/or keywords to find both direct hits and related articles.

  • Page Number Search.  Searches the subset of the specific number if the page and identifies all related articles.

  • Page Category Search.  Searches the subset of the specific category of the page and identifies all related articles.

  • Author Name Search.  Searches the subset of the author file and identifies all related articles.

  • Special Section Search.  Searches the subset of the special section file and identifies all related articles.

  • Full-Text Search.  Uses keyword(s) to search the entire database and identify all relevant files.

  • Exclusive Search.  Eliminates unwanted search results by running exclusive keyword(s), which improves the efficiency and the accuracy of the search engine.

  • Combined Search.  Combines the above search commands in any configuration.
